Visit to Orsett
On a lovely sunny morning 15 members met at St Giles and All Saints church Orsett, where the rector of the 12/16c church gave a very informative talk. A few of our more brave members climbed up to the bell tower while the rest of us explored the church. Tea/ coffee and biscuits rounded of a very lovely visit.
Following the church we then set of for a leisurely walk around the village taking in the 18c lock up, a memorial to Lady Diana and the 18c building that was a private school for girls at 20 Guineas per annum. Taking a rest at the war memorial will we waited for the pub to open we could see the old bakery in Rectory Road where Piggs steam bakery was before they opened a shop on the corner of Lodge Lane and Southend Road which is still referred to today as Piggs corner.
Lunch at the Whitmore Arms which was originally called the Dog and Gun was the perfect end to a lovely visit.
