The Cycling Group, (The' Pootlers') meet on the first Friday of the month at 10.am outside 172 Church Road (just off Maplin Way North). They meet there because it is close to the seafront cycling track, which they make use of most times. The leader of the group is Paul Sleap.
The group cycle along at the speed of the slowest, safety helmets are advised to be worn, lycra is frowned upon, especially for the ladies, as too much excitement in one day, might just have some old lads falling off their bikes. Just make sure that brakes & tyres are ok. New members are always welcome , the time spent in the cafe is just as important as on our bikes, The main criteria is enjoyment , with no one taking it too seriously
Where they head for usually depends on the weather. They cycle for half an hour or so, spend a lot of time in a cafe having a laugh and a chat then head back to finish about midday.
An email is sent a few days before each meeting, reminding members to check their brakes, and inform them that should the weather be so bad meaning they would get wet before they start the day might be cancelled. This has only happened once in four years in this case an email would be sent by 9.15 on the day. Should there be any doubt the leader will always turn up even if he is sitting in his car telling you to go home.
The Summer Cycling Group were out in force in May with a seafront ride to Chalkwell. A couple of us carried on to Shoebury Garrison, fuelled by the coffee and cakes consumed at the halfway point
