The Latin Group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month in the afternoon from 2.00-4.00 pm. Peter Graves is the Group Leader. The next meeting will be on Thursday 28th February between 2.00 to 4.00 pm.
We are currently working through a text book and learning how sentences are constructed in Latin and the way in which verbs, nouns and other parts of speech change depending on their use. Pronunciation is something else again, but, fortunately, there are no ancient Romans around to correct us.
On the lighter side we study Latin phrases that have made their way into English by looking at their meaning and derivation which sometimes leads to a lot of head scratching. We also look at 'dog Latin' that looks like Latin but isn't: Semper ubi sub ubi contains Latin words and literally translates as 'always where under where' or 'always wear underwear' when you say it out loud. Who said that learning Latin wasn't fun?
