London Group 7
The leaders of London Group 7 are Dave & Dana Harbage.
Our recent visits have been amongst others, the London Mithraeum Exhibition in EC4, the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, Highgate Cemetery, the Tate & National Galleries, Southbank to Waterloo, Ragged School museum and Wapping/Limehouse. These are the key highlights of the trips, but the additional points of interest are far too numerous to include here.
This month’s walk on a conveniently dry day focused on Hyde Park, and in particular the Belgrave area to the south west of the park. As regards the latter, ‘Count the flags’ was played as we walked past numerous embassies and important buildings in the grand roads surrounding the square. The mews hidden behind many of the grand architecture delight at every turn of the corner - featuring impressive uses including upmarket boutiques and famous restaurants. Best of all was the discovery of interesting - typically 200 year old pubs, such as The Star, The Grenadier and the Nags Head - which on the leader’s birthday had to be tasted rather than just viewed!
The Grenadier in Wilton Row probably had the most interesting features, accompanied by a story of an annual haunting in the month of September. Essentially a soldier was beaten to death after being caught cheating at cards; pub goers subsequently plastered the ceilings with money as a means of ‘repaying the ghost’s gaming debt’ and laying the spirit to rest.
Finally, after losing a few members, the group has spaces for a few newcomers who enjoy investigating such interesting and hidden places in London on a monthly (second Tuesday)
