NEW GROUP SUGGESTIONS – MARCH 2020
THE FOLLOWING ARE SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW GROUPS WHICH THORPE BAY U3A ARE CONSIDERING

The group is suitable for anyone interested in drawing whatever their ability. Members will meet at a chosen
location and spend up to a couple of hours at the chosen site. Members of the group jointly decide on future
outings. Sketching outdoors is subject to the weather. During the winter months, indoor venues in Southend
could be chosen. The aim of the group is to encourage each other and have fun each month.
This group will provide practical opportunities for those new to writing and the more experienced to develop
your writing skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The group will explore both the writing techniques
and the writing process and there will also be plenty of chances to actually write . The group will explore
Creative writing in all its forms, fiction, non-fiction, family and personal histories, and long and short stories.
You will also have the chance to get constructive feedback on your own work on a regular basis.
HUMOUR FOR WELL BEING
Banish your blues and come along and have a good laugh, the greatest tonic of all. There are a wealth of
humorous activities to keep you amused but will always be looking for new initiatives to keep the momentum
NATURAL HISTORY WALKS
The group will meet at places of interest for natural history in the local countryside.
These will be gentle walks, with plenty of stops to identify birds, butterflies, flowers and insects along the way.
Bring a camera to record your finds.
For beginners in the language, the focus will be on conversing in typical Portuguese tourist situations with a
strong emphasis on pronunciation rather than grammar. The aim is to learn together from language courses,
books and other media
MEMBERS ON THEIR OWN (MOTO)
If you are on your own and would like some company sometimes then why not join this group.
The group could have a meeting to discuss planning things you would like to do together: having coffee, lunch
or tea, attending musical events, visiting outside attractions or whatever members have found to be of
Most events would be very local, and members would meet at the venue at the chosen time and date.
This is a simple and very social game played by people with boules. Little skill is needed apart from the ability
to have a little fun and to laugh quite a lot, so come and join this group. The beauty of the game is that
complete beginners can compete almost immediately with experienced players and there is no real limit to the
number of players taking part. Anyone is welcome to join but be warned, it’s very addictive!
This group will meet at The White Hall Bowls Club Clatterfield Gardens, Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea,
Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 0AX and will be pay as you play.
HISTORY OF SOUTHEND
Local History is always popular, and this group could combine a mixture of interesting and enjoyable talks
researched by members of the group with visits to places of interest in the town. U3A members have a wealth
of knowledge of this town to share with the group.,
This group could study the many solutions to climate breakdown and focus on three questions: What's going
on to put these solutions into effect, locally and beyond? How may we help personally or communally? Who
can help us to help?
The aim of this group will be to group expand members’ knowledge of patchwork and quilting techniques as
well as beading and any other textile crafts members want to explore. Members will share knowledge and
experience of patchwork, quilting and other textile projects so that all members can continue to progress
towards their own goals.
COFFEE AND CAKE (OR TEA)
Members of this group will meet at local cafes to enjoy good company while indulging in light refreshments.
HISTORY OF FASHION
This will be a research and discussion group focusing on fashion, both clothing and design through the ages.
Visits to museums could also be part of this group’s activities.
BEER AND ALE
A group for members who want to enjoy good company while trying some of the many different beers and ales
available at local pubs and bars.
