A Gardening Group's get-together
Gardening Groups one and two got together in February to share their monthly meeting, Group one's leader Sue Davey explained, "It's an idea that we are trying out and if it works then we might meet together again." Nearly 70 of us filled the Salvation Army Hall, extra chairs had to be fetched and the worthy tea and coffee making team worked hard to provide hot drinks for everyone.
Our speaker, David Clarke, talked about and showed photographs of gardens he and his wife had visited. We were impressed as he reeled off the latin names of all the plants in his slideshow until he confessed he was just reading them from a list. "My wife is the gardener and I'm not," he said. "I prune the roses and mow the lawn but I'm not allowed to touch the plants because I don't know what I'm doing basically." But when it comes to taking photographs David clearly does have the knowledge and the slideshow of gardens, plants and sculptures he had photographed was wonderful. David is also good at telling jokes and here's one that made us laugh - Petrol mowers are similar to men in the garden, they are difficult to start, noisy and often won't work at all!
The gardens featured in his talk were Stockton Bury Gardens in Leominster, Cruckfield House in Shrewsbury, Wollerton Old Hall Garden in Market Drayton,
Parm Place in Cheshire, Tatton Park Flower Show and his own beautiful garden in Hockley.
We wish David well because he is retiring after 14 years of doing talks due to ill health.
