Book Club Two
This group is led by Christine Mardon and meets each month on the third Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The Group is currently full as we have 10 members and this is about the maximum number that I can accommodate and that the Library can supply.
We all read the same book each month and then meet to discuss it. We aim for variety and we have a number of booklists to choose from. A different member of the group makes the selection each month and we usually submit three choices to the library in case they have difficulty in obtaining our first choice. This has led to a few surprises.
Since we started we have read a wide variety of books with authors ranging from Bill Bryson and Sebastian Faulks to Kate Morton and F Scott Fitzgerald. In the process, everyone has been introduced to new novels they would not otherwise have read.
Each member of the group has picked books they would like to read. These have been selected through personal choice or from recommended reading lists. A lively discussion of that month’s read follows at the next meeting before each member allocates an ‘enjoyment’ score out of ten. Opinions do range widely. For example, the provocatively entitled, ‘No, I don’t want to join a book club’ by Virginia Ironside received a top score of eight and a bottom mark of just two.
