Our Living Language
If the origins, meanings, uses and abuses of our fascinating written and spoken tongue are of interest to you, then this is the group for you. We enjoy lectures, talks and discussions led by ourselves or outside speakers in a friendly, informal setting.
We meet in the Methodist Church Hall in Alveston usually on the 4th Monday of the month at 2pm. Expenses and refreshments are covered by a contribution of £1.00 per meeting.
The programme for the next half-year is as follows:
November 26th: Double-bill. Angela Green on the Language of Textiles and Alan Payne on American English.
(There is no meeting on Christmas Eve!)
January 28th: Winter Poems. Bring your favourite and share with others.
February 25th: Bob Dale talking (about) Nonsense
March 25th: John Green on the Origin and Use of Parliamentary Language.
April 15th (NB 3rd Monday due to Bank Holiday): Jane Foley elucidating Cryptic Crosswords.
May 20th (NB 3rd Monday due to Bank Holiday): Maurice Bell on The Border Ballads.
