The group is currently studying the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. A variety of source material relating to the Spanish Armada has recently been studied followed by discussions on the reasons for its failure and ‘what if’ it had succeeded. During the next year a variety of aspects of Elizabethan England will be covered such as her government and control of finances, culture, exploration and trade. Sources will also be available relating to population, life in towns, changes in the countryside, and interpreting a variety of portraits of the Queen herself. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Stuart Room at the Chantry, Thornbury at 10.30 am (coffee from 10.00 am). There is a charge of £1 per session to cover hire of the room, refreshments and the printing of handouts available at each session.
