Past Civilisations
We meet monthly from 10.30 to noon. Recently this fairly small group has met in the Leader’s house but with an increase in numbers we are returning to Porch House from February. Access is via the back kitchen entrance, down the steps by the church entrance but, by arrangement, we can open the main door should steps be a problem.
For the past year we have been looking at the development of Greek Art and Architecture from the earliest days. We plan to have a brief look at some drama in the spring followed by a visit to the Roman Baths in Bath in April as a prelude to studying the start of the Rise of the Roman Empire. We plan to go back to the very beginning with the Etruscans and Greek colonies, eventually following through the various stages to the Romans in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, replacing the Greek Empire. There is no set course, we tend to pick up on topics which are of interest to the group as we investigate together. We show documentaries to help us, particularly when looking at notable people, and will include relevant drama and poetry as we proceed and also look at the archaeology that illustrates how these important people lived.
