THIRSK U3A AGM - 12 January 2016

The Thirsk U3A held their Annual General Meeting at Sowerby Parochial Hall, their monthly venue. Over 100 members attended, a record so far, which was close to the limits of the facility.

Six of the interest groups; Family History, Gardening, Geology, Patchwork, Embroidery and Collage, Reading for Pleasure and Wine Appreciation created displays of their work and had members on hand to talk to interested parties. The displays were viewed with great enthusiasm, generating possible interest in new activities.

After the general business we were entertained by the Ukulele group, introduced and led by Martyn Shakespeare. They opened with an amusing song about the joys of being a u3a member to the tune of Blowing in the Wind. This was followed by You are my Sunshine, Singing the Blues and The San Francisco Bay Blues. The calls for "more" were such that we were treated to an encore and were invited to join in with Enjoy Yourself it's Later Than You Think.

The Dancing for Fun group gave a spirited insight into their activities when they demonstrated a variety of 6 short dances, some in-line and some sequence, some with partners and some without. As a finale they invited the audience to join them on the floor for some free-style dancing.

It was amazing to think that four of these eight groups were founded less than a year ago, at which time many of the members had no experience at all.

Refreshments followed offering further opportunities to view the displays.

I wish to thank all the groups for their enthusiasm and hard work, with special thanks going to Denise Sparks, our Group Co-Ordinator, our Committee, and also to the ladies manning the refreshment room.
