Modern Classics
A new type of book group meeting on the 1st Thursday of the month in Thetford Library at 2.00 pm
We're taking a break and the next meeting will be on March 5th
In December we read 'A Christmas Carol'
In January we will be reading 'Cranford'
In February 'Tender is the Night'
Previous books:, 'Jane Eyre',Thomas Hardy's 'Under the Greenwood Tree' and Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca'
As the time range for the modern classical selection will be up to the 1930’s some of us may have read them at school and now can reread them with a different mindset in a different century. Perhaps in discussion we can reflect that many of these books were written before females were able to vote, several famous women writers had to use male nom de plumes in order to be published
Also ranging further afield there are many wonderful writers from other lands to be read and commented on. Alan Paton, John Steinbeck and Pearl S Buck to name but a few.
So come, join us and bring your suggestions, we will have a “lucky dip” to determine future books if enough ideas are forthcoming.
