The History group meets on the 2nd Wednesday in the month at the Church on the Way at 2pm. We decide what topics we wish to study and how long we will spend on each one. You don’t need to know much about history as everyone will be encouraged and helped to contribute.
Latest News - Our next topic will be 'From Lilacs to She Loves You' looking at the events of post-war Briton from 1945-1964 and how these changed the way people lived. We will look at such things as the foundation of the NHS, the building boom and modernity changing the look of our homes, the growth of coffee bars and our social interactions and the beginnings of multiculturalism. This will not be a walk down memory lane although our memories and perceptions of the time are relevant.
We are looking at the English Reformation and at the next meeting will be creating our own timeline from 1530-1603.
We have finished with the Romans for the moment and are moving on to look at the life and times of Richard II.
Previously: We were studying the Roman Invasion of Britain, from the British perspective. We researched how the Britons lived, their families and well-being as well as what they wore and ate. One sub-group looked at Boudica's rebellion and the religions that contributed to it while another investigated garrison life for the Roman soldiers.
Although this may seem a little daunting to non-historians (which covers the whole group!) we hope that it will be enjoyable as well as informative.
