Almost all of us were absolute beginners when we started in early 2016 but soon became skilled and very keen players. It’s very easy to learn the basics { I started when I was a youngster } and in some ways it’s similar to some card games. We’re a very friendly and sociable group and play every Tuesday afternoon from 2.00 pm. to 4.00 pm. in the Engine Room at the Charles Burrell Centre, refreshments are available and the centre has ample parking. New players are always very welcome, whether you’re a complete beginner or have played in the past. It usually takes only a couple of afternoons and then you’re able to progress very quickly to using the higher-scoring ways to win more points if you’re dealt a good hand to begin with.
Players are dealt 13 tiles each to start the game and by picking up and discarding one tile at a time, they attempt to make various groups or patterns. For instance, three or four of a kind {called a pong or kong}, earn points according to their value and the first player to make all their tiles into groups is the winner. One of the best things about Mahjong is that each player can choose the level they wish to play at, regardless of how the other players at the table are playing. So everyone stands a equal chance of having a successful and enjoyable game.
One word of warning – You may have seen a computer game called Mahjong but NO, that is definitely not the real thing.
Proper Mahjong is a game for three or four real live people sitting at a table, talking to each other and having an enjoyable and gently stimulating couple of hours !
If you’d like to try it out, give me a call on 07958 – 977326 or just come along to the Engine Room on a Tuesday afternoon.
