BOOK CLUB 2
We are sad not to be able to meet in person during Covid19 restrictions, but WE ARE ZOOMING!!
This new book club started in January 2020 as the original book club is full. We usually meet in the lounge at Great Barn Court, or in people's homes if it is not available, on the second Thursday of each month, from 2-4. Currently we are Zooming, still on the second Thursday of each month.
The group take turns in bringing three titles - either actual books or information about them - for the group to choose one from for the following month. The group is growing and the membership will be kept below 10, so that everyone has the chance to have their say about each book.
Members get books from the library, on Kindle, or from Abebooks or Amazon, or from charity shops, but that takes more time and luck!
Our book choice for 11th March was 'Not Quite Nice', by Celia Imrie, and for 8th April was 'Dear Fatty', Dawn French's Memoir. We felt that both ladies definitely shouldn't give up the day job. Celia Imrie's novel had some interesting twists and turns, but the number of characters at times made it hard to follow, and we did not get to know most of them in any depth; it is set up for some sequels, and was a fun light read. 'Dear Fatty' was written in the form of letters to friends, colleagues and family including her father who died when she was nineteen. Her pain over her father's suicide was clear, but catharsis does not necessarily have to be published. There were many funny moments both in her personal life and throughout her career and her friendships particularly with Jennifer Saunders, who is the Fatty of the title. But some of the letters, particularly the ones to Madonna, were weird, and we also felt she was crude for the sake of it at times.
Our next book for 13th May is '10lb Penalty' by Dick Francis, with some political intrigue, and maybe not as many horses!
