Tewkesbury

Discussion Group - online and LIVE!

TU3A Discussion Group LIVE AT THE GUPSHILL is starting up again, from 10th March 2022 at 10.35 for 11.00 - 2nd and 4th Thursdays
Please note the new timing - the Gupshill only opens its doors at 10.30, so there is no point in arriving before 10.35.

Dear Discussers
I am contacting as many members of the previous TU3A Discussion and Discussion2 as I can, from the somewhat discarded info I have, to tell you that Janet Gilbert-Smith is going to start the LIVE Discussion up, as interim leader, until someone steps up to Lead the Group.
Please don't be shy - Janet needs some help to be offered, please.
I am continuing to do a Discussion session online, at the same time, so it will be interesting to see how many of the 2020/2021 Zoomers will in future go to the live meetings instead.
I am not leading the live meeting because my considered policy is to require fully-jabbed before joining.
The U3A policy is to let anyone in, regardless of jab-status.
Please take your masks along with you for negotiating the pub area and buying your drinks.
Once settled in the room, it's up to you. It will normally be - as before - in the corner room at the front of the pub.
The LIVE meeting will cost each member 50p plus the cost of a drink, as before.
I have organized the Gupshill to expect you, each 2nd Thursday of the month, at 10.35.
Good luck, Janet!
Regards Carol

u3a Tewkesbury Discussion Group - meeting ONLINE on 2nd and 4th Thursdays, at 10.30am

TU3A Discussion has been meeting via Zoom since 2020 March, with very patchy attendance.

Anyone wanting to join us should contact Carol on LancsCarol@gmail.com
We now have a standardized regular sign-on link for members to use for each meeting;
Carol has sent Zoom joining details to all members of the group
who have told Carol their most recent, preferred, email address.
Owing to a SPAM glitch on Carol's email, it is now difficult for Carol
to send regular notices to members of the Group,
so please use the last link that Carol sent to you - keep it handy, on perhaps a text file?

We have about half a dozen regular attendees, and maybe four others who have attended.
We try to have a proper Discussion topic, but when we are only the very few regulars,
we frequently begin to talk sociably about other topics of interest to us few.

If more members joined us, we would stick to a more formal Discussion format,
as there would be more opinions and facts to share in the group.

The national u3a and therefore u3a Tewkesbury took the decision
to close ALL face-to-face Groups until further notice,
from 16th March 2020.
Since then, some groups have opened online, and some have done what they can,
within prevailing/changing government and u3a rules, like walking in groups of six.

If any Discussion Group member wishes to conduct face-to-face meetings, during the pandemic,
Carol invites them to start to lead a face-to-face group, and Carol will cooperate fully
in contacting all known possible group members, to offer the invitation to attend "LIVE".
It would be possible to attend both meetings, or either, if we can agree on different times/days.

OLD DETAILS about the group ...

The Gupshill Manor on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, 10.15am for 10.30am.

Topics planned for Discussion on the right of this page >>>>>

The discussion starts at 10.30, so we meet at about 10.15 to buy a drink each; tea, coffee, orange juice etc. This is our contribution to pay for the venue. Also 50p to the kitty, for normal U3A attendance fee, please.

Future topics should be available on the right, when planned sufficiently in advance, when the leader remembers to alter the website...
We have a selection of moral dilemmas, culled from the internet, to fill the gaps

Directions to the venue
The Gupshill Manor is located on the A38 Gloucester Road outside Tewkesbury; a Tudor building set back on the west side of the road. There is plenty of parking space, with two entrances to the car park if you miss the first one.
This is about a mile away from the Tewkesbury Cross in the centre of town.

The venue is fairly accessible for wheelchair users - we are able to open a door for access across flat ground from the car park, when we meet in the usual room at the front corner of the building.
Turn right immediately at the lower pub entrance: if you go in via the front door, turn left: order your drink as you pass the bar.

There are buses, somewhat infrequently, but a massive car park too.
Stagecoach bus number 41 leaves at 9.40 from Northway, 10.03 from Boots/High Street, reaches Guphill Manor at 10.06.
The next bus at 10.00 from Northway, 10.23 from Boots, arrives at Gupshill at 10.26 - if it's on time, of course...

How it works
We spend an hour or more on the main topic of the day, which may be something making the news at the time, or something chosen in advance by the group.
[See the link Topics planned for Discussion on the right of this page]
After that, conversation roams across a wide range of topics until it's time to leave at noon - always too soon for us.

We have a regular chairperson, Janet. Other members occasionally will chair the meeting, if Janet is unable to attend.

Our conversation covers serious and light-hearted issues, so can be enlightening, as well as fun.
We often have a good laugh - always good for you!
Some of us have even been known to change our minds about a fundamentally held opinion, in the light of convincing argument [always good-natured - please!] put forward by other group members.

Membership
As of 2020 Spring, we were at full capacity for the venue and for a discussion forum - this is no longer true for the online version!

A new group - Discussion2 - started in September 2017, with Carol as interim Group Leader.
The group was wound up in January 2020 owing to very poor attendance, and also because no-one was prepared to become group leader.

Let's have more suggestions for topics to discuss. Some ideas are listed top right. Almost anything can be the subject of lively, informed and tolerant debate - and - yes, some people do play "devil's advocate"; so it's best not to make your mind up too soon......

See you next time?
