30th October, Orchestration, John Beech:-
The composer or orchestrator creates sound colour by arranging and combining the unique timbre of different instruments. He or she needs to be familiar with instrumental ranges and their dynamic capabilities, and how the sounds are blended and balanced.
The following compositions will be used to illustrate the development in orchestration:-
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) Overture 'The ruins of Athens', 1811
Hector Berlioz (1803 - 1869) Roman Carnival Overture, 1844
Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908) 'Procession of the Nobles' from Mlada, 1890
Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949), Don Juan, 1888
Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937) 'Pavane pour une infante defunte' piano version 1899 and orchestral version 1910
Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971) Petrouska, 1911, First Scene
Ottorino Respighi (1879 - 1936), Rossiniana, Suite for orchestra, 1925

16 October 2013, John Beech:-

Mikhail Glinka (1804-57) Overture in A major (c. 1822-6) is a nicely shaped and attractively scored creation, but without a trace of a Russian voice.

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) Melancolie (1940), is a dreamy, sensuous, sophisticated piano work, quite different from his jazzy piano music of the 20s.

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) Organ Concerto no. 3 in G minor (1735), shows Handel becoming aware of new effects of orchestral colour.

Kurt Weill (1900-50) Little Threepenny Music (1929), a wind-ensemble suite created by Weill from his Threepenny Opera.

Benjamin Britten (1913-76) Simple Symphony for Strings, Op.4 (1934). For those unfamiliar with Britten's music, this is a good introductory piece. It was written for schools orchestras.

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Concerto Grosso no. 1 (1682) is music of balance and grace.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) The 'underwater' beginning of Das Reingold, the beginning of 'The Ring', first performed in 1876, which influenced Mascagni.

Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) the beginning of his opera Iris (1898). The prologue is a tone poem depicting the passage from night to sunrise, beautifully scored and culminating in the splendid choral greeting of the sun, proclaiming its warmth, its beauty and its boundless capacity for love.
