Striders - more challenging walks

The ‘Striders’ walking group evolved from the original U3A walking group and was set up on 1st September 2015 to cater for members with the fitness level and aspiration to tackle longer walks and/or significant ascents. The applicable U3A grades for our walks are loosely described below:-

Blue: A moderate walk up to 12km (8 miles), with ascent of up to 200m or 720'. This allows 2 ascents of the Sandstone ridge.

Red: A more demanding walk which can be longer, up to 18km (12 miles) and/or have more ascent, up to 600m or 2000'. This could include many of the peaks in Snowdonia and the Peak District.

Black: A walk usually visiting mountain tops with over 600m (2000') of ascent. This could include Snowdon, the Glyderi and the Carneddau. (Note that black walks are only for those who are reasonably fit and may be arranged by the group on an ad hoc, unofficial basis, outside the programme.)

Our walks are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month and predominately fall into the Blue+ or Red grades with some Blue grades and also an occasional black grade thrown in for those who like a tougher challenge. Typically, starting at 10:00am, our walks are in the region of 7 to 10 miles, taking 4 to 5 hours including breaks, though this may be slightly shorter in winter or inclement weather. We have rest breaks as required and one stop for a packed lunch. Ideally we end the walk by visiting a nearby pub or tearoom to recharge our batteries.

Walks are over varied terrain in equally varied weather conditions, so appropriate clothing and footwear are essential. Some walks are local, but most are further afield and we car share wherever possible to get to the starting point. Group members take turns to lead, but we don't expect new inexperienced members to lead straight away and, in line with the U3A ethos of self-learning/helping and supporting others to learn, help is always available for planning and checking out walks.

Walk descriptions/walk programmes are circulated to members by e-mail and our joint conveners, Toots Williamson and Gwyn Jones, hold records of walks and a register of members in the group.

The Striders walk programme can be accessed by clicking the link on the right hand side of this page.
