Recorder

Group Leader: Ruth Porter (ruthjporter@gmail.com)
Venue: Member's House in Baughurst
Time: Fridays 10.30 - 11.30

After the enforced break due to the pandemic followed by the sad loss of Pat, the recorder group has restarted with the previous two groups - beginners and `old faithfuls' – joined together.

We are (mostly) a bit rusty and so are concentrating on fairly simple pieces where if possible we already know what they should sound like! While we hope to take on more challenging pieces in time, the emphasis is on having fun and producing a sound that we (on the whole) can enjoy.

We currently have three people who play a tenor recorder which is pitched an octave lower than the descants and this enables us to tackle some part playing. Fingering for both instruments is the same but larger hands, or fingers that are able to stretch wider, are needed for the larger instrument. So, the descants outnumber the tenors! We also have a couple of people who are getting to grips with the treble which is medium sized but has different fingering – which can be a challenge. So in time we hope to be able to play pieces with 3 parts.

If any other U3A members feel inclined to have a go at joining us, they would be most welcome. If you have played in the past, you would be amazed at how much your fingers remember, so come along and have a go. If you have never played, we would need to chat about how to get you started but don’t let that put you off.
