Mah Jong is the game of the four winds. From its origin in China it has developed in different ways, and now has many variations.
We play, in the main to British Mah Jong rules. The game is for four players, though can be played by three.
It is played with 144 tiles, made up of winds, dragons, circles, characters and bamboo. A complete hand is made up of 14 tiles. The aim is to collect sets of tiles – often called strange names such as "Big Robert" and "Gerties Garter", when you have a set you call “Mah Jong” and score lots of points.
The games can go on for hours but we only meet for 2 hours.
If you would like to observe this seemingly strange game being played or to join us, just turn up at a meeting – 10.00a.m. on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at Syston Community Centre, or contact me, Margaret King, through the link above.
