The Royal Forest of Dean - Monday, 20th to Friday, 24th April 2020
With a great deal of help from Andy Meaton, I’m planning a few days away for U3A members in the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire in April next year. The proposed dates are from Monday, 20th to Friday, 24th April 2020 - these dates avoid Easter and half-term school holidays. However, there is no reason why you shouldn’t choose more or fewer days, as you wish.
There is a wide choice of accommodation in the area to suit your preferences - a sample selection is shown below under "Places to Stay”. I am not planning to organise accommodation as there is such a variety available both in and near the Forest. Be sure to choose and book your lodgings direct as early as possible to avoid disappointment. I suggest B & B plus evening meal if you wish.
Although predominantly planned as a birdwatching and nature getaway; the Forest and the surrounding area are renowned for forest walking routes and cycling trails, the beautiful scenery and many other places of interest. I have included two lists of suggested “Places of Interest” (POI) for Birdwatching and Nature studies and "Other places of interest and for sightseeing” and other interest groups such as architecture, cycling, geology, history and photography, to name but a few - see below.
At the moment, this is a simple overview of the possibilities. There isn’t (yet) a timetable of what to do on a particular day because, as Andy says, it's easy to adapt walks and locations when we see what the weather holds and how far people want to walk; he’s happy to advise or lead as much or as little as members would like!
I should be happy to receive your comments and please don’t hesitate to register your interest with me as soon as possible so that plans can be developed further.
