U3A JUNIPER GROUP (Gin Appreciation)

All group activity was interrupted by Covid-19 and Government restrictions. However, the lifting of restrictions on July 19th 2021 means that most groups can consider meeting again, if they haven't already done so.

Please revisit our group pages soon to see the new plans that are being put in place for the remainder of 2022,

Pre-Covid Information

As a group we decided over time:

  • to meet monthly at a day and date and time to suit the majority. This may be seasonally adjusted to hold the meetings in the afternoon during winter months
  • to meet at members’ homes in rotation for a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere and no hall hire fees to pay. Consequently we limited membership to ten.
  • the host to choose the gin of the month and provide members with tasting notes if possible.
  • each member of the group to be offered two 25ml (single measures) of the gin. The first to be accompanied by the “house” tonic, chosen to be Schweppes tonic, slimline or normal. The quantity of tonic to be decided by each member.
  • the second measure of gin to be accompanied by a “guest” tonic chosen by the host.
  • host will provide ice, slices of lemon and lime and a few nibbles such as crisps, breadsticks and small cubes of cheese or fruit to accompany the gin.
  • following a discussion, members will rate the gin on the basis of 1 (low) to 5 (high).

The cost is £2.50 each, payable to the host who obviously retains the remainder of the gin. The price was decided after several fully costed sessions which emerged to always come out around £2.50 per person. We think of this as a bargain price to try two new drinks of gin every month with two different tonics.

The group’s members will keep an eye out for ideas of gin distillery visits in the future.

At the moment the group is full but any future vacancies will be published on the website, at general meetings and in the newsletter.

If you like the idea of a gin group and cannot wait - why not start your own? Happy to help!
