Spalding Gentlemen’s Society
On 26th November 15 members of the local history group visited the premises of the
fascinating Spalding Gentleman’s Society on Broad Street to view its historic museum. Founded in 1710, the SGS is often referred to as Spalding’s Hidden Gem and is the oldest provincial learned society in Britain. Former members include Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Tennyson and Alexander Pope.
After an introductory talk we began our guided wanderings around the museum’s astonishingly varied collection - which includes 15th century Inca pottery, Venetian glass, historic firearms, silverware, Chinese porcelain and so much more. Alll agreed that further visits were necessary to fully appreciate the wealth of objects in the SGS collection.
