|Place:||United Reformed Church, Sutton Coldfield, B73 6AA|
|Day:||1st & 3rd Wednesdays and held in the Juniper Room (First Floor)|
The Writing Group is for all. It doesn’t matter whether you are an experienced writer or have never written before, you will be very welcome. You will be able to write at your own level in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
We work on a project, collaborative basis sometimes in small groups or individually. Short writing projects are always chosen by the group and as you can see we have a wide variety of subjects to choose from. Some may be lighthearted and we hope fun, some may be more challenging.
Projects include short stories, poetry, novel writing, film/theatre/radio scripts, journalism, monologues, poetry with music, plays with voices etc, nostalgic/autobiographical writing. We use writing exercises to 'stretch our writing muscles’ and look at the ways in which writing interacts with the reader, the ways in which meaning is created. There is a group discussion to support this side of the activity.
At each meeting we have a tea/coffee break with biscuits and cake. This is not only a time for refreshment, it also gives us a chance to get to know each other and make friends and vitally important if we are to feel comfortable sharing and discussing our writing.
What we do:
We have published two Anthologies and in 2018 we will be producing our third but the content will be based on Poetry only. This year for the first time we held a Group Poetry Competition whereby each member submitted their own poem/s. In 2017 the winning poem and writer was awarded a framed copy of their poem and a bottle of Fizz!!
A typical session will involve:
- Presentation of a topic
- Writing exercises (sometimes in groups)
- Homework for discussion at the following meeting
- Peer review and discussion of homework
......and lots, lots more interesting subjects
