The badminton group continues to meet in the main hall at the Penarth Leisure Centre throughout the year on Friday morning from 10.00 until 12.00. We join in with the “Young at Heart” programme so we meet men and women from around the area. Ages vary from people in their 50s to some who are in their late 70s. We are a mixed ability group and the majority of us are ones who are picking up the game after a long absence. Some of us haven’t played for over 40yrs so we play for fun and friendship. We generally start with a gentle “knock-up” so we can warm up the muscles. Playing doubles tends to be the norm and we swap courts and playing partners after each game so we soon get to know the rest of the group of players and new friendships are quickly made. Naturally, players want to win games but the atmosphere is light-hearted and friendly.
Most players have their own racquets but if you don’t have one, racquets can be requested from the centre’s reception desk. Also some of the group members have spare racquets so it is possible to borrow one to see if the game is for you. Players should have suitable footwear such as trainers or daps and comfortable clothing which allows you to move freely. If you are unsure of whether to join us then call in to the hall to see us and have a chat with the players.
The sessions are reasonably priced. If you have an “Expressions” or “Freestyle” card for the over 60s the price is £2.10 each week. You will just need proof of being at least 60yrs old when you initially apply for the free card at the reception desk. If you have full membership at the centre, there is no extra payment for the badminton.
There is no commitment to play every week. You join in when you feel you want to have a bit of exercise and friendly company. We would love to see you, so do call in and join us.
