Genealogy 5 - Beginners

While it is common for people to use the terms 'genealogy' and 'family history' interchangeably, they actually have a subtle but different meaning. Genealogy, the study of ancestry and descent, refers more to the actual search for ancestors, while family history, the narrative of the events in your ancestors' lives, denotes the telling of your family's story. Family history is genealogy come alive.

Members of our Genealogy groups embrace both facets. Using records of births, marriages and deaths, together with census returns and many other sources we discover who our ancestors are. Using a variety of historical resources: timelines, social histories, newspaper accounts, biographies, etc we discover the circumstances of their lives - what they did for a living, how they spent their leisure time and their position in the town or community, the types of food they ate, the clothes they wore and much more.

This new group is aimed at people who have started, but not achieved very much, and those who are just taking up this fascinating hobby. The group members will learn how to access all of the different records available, work through them methodically and put them together in a logical way .

"Most research is done using the internet. All potential group members need to have basic Computer skills in order to take a full part in group sessions and to continue their own family research".
