Latin (Improvers)

Leader Margaret Dews BA Hons Latin
1st and 3rd Thursday 10.30 am to 12 noon.

Because of illness we are now a small group of four. All the students started Latin from scratch in 2007. We worked our way through Rhoda Hendrick's Latin Made Simple, covering all the grammar, then decided to revise what we had learned with Lingua Latina: Familia Romana. We have now finished this book, which traces the adventures of a family's slaves and children and the conversations of parents and friends; grammar is introduced gradually and all explanations are cleverly given in Latin. This means that anyone, anywhere in the world, can use it. We dipped into bits of Vergil, Catullus and Pliny along the way (the eruption of Vesuvius was very exciting!) and are now reading selected short stories in Latin.

In the past we have had excursions to Chedworth, Bath, Cirencester, St Albans, Wall and Wroxeter but that was then...

One of our members does the Times Latin Crossword every week!
