Welcome to Stour Valley U3A
Stour Valley, whose river is the border between Suffolk and Essex, is part of the National U3A network providing members with opportunities to broaden their horizons; involving themselves in new learning experiences; meeting and making new friends; developing skills in social, sporting and academic arenas. Members share their talents with others creating a truly self help organisation. There are currently over 300 local members enjoying this experience.
Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment, and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We do this by developing a wide range of groups including language study, country walking, table tennis, art workshops, computer studies, garden and historic buildings visits. Members join as many or as few of these groups as they wish.
In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas; this includes Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, Stratford St Mary and East Bergholt where our monthly lectures are held. We also welcome members from further afield.
The Stour Valley U3A began in October 1990 with less than 30 members. Since then, the membership has grown steadily and offers 35 Interest Groups. We are affiliated to the Third Age Trust. The Annual Membership is £12 and this entitles members to attend the monthly lectures held on 2nd Wednesday of each month in The Constable Hall, East Bergholt. as well as joining any Groups in which they have an interest.
