Twelve years ago this group started playing ‘Classic Canasta’ – 2 packs of cards/11 cards dealt/ pick up and discard 1 card - 1 canasta required to “go out” and game ends at 5,000 points.
As the group enlarged, we progressed to ‘Samba Canasta’ – 3 packs of cards/15 cards dealt/pick up 2 and discard 1 card - 2 canastas required to “go out”. A Samba canasta is a sequence of 7 cards in the same suit and the game ends at 10,000 points.
An added interest to the game of ‘Samba Canasta’ is ‘Bolivia Canasta’ – the favoured game of the group. The same rules apply as Samba but a Bolivia canasta is made up of wild cards only and the value is 2,500 points. 2 canastas are needed to “go out” but one of the canastas MUST be a samba (sequence canasta in this game called an escalera). The game ends at 15,000 points.
January 2019 we explored ‘Brazilia Canasta’ which is an extension of Bolivia. Bolivia and Brazilia are being played at each session – it is members choice.
Currently this class is full but, new members are welcome to ‘observe’ an afternoon of canasta at any time. As soon as there are any vacancies in this group, I will put a notice on the website notice board.
