Railway History

The Railway History group meets on Zoom where members talk about topics about railways either in the past, present or future and in any country. These are usually illustrated talks.
Talks are usually held on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm so you can take part in the comfort of your own home. Joining details will be sent a few days before the meeting.

The next Group meeting on Zoom will be on Wednesday April 24th at 7.30pm
Stephen Rabone will give an illustrated talk about the railways of Northern Ireland in 1944 using his father's notes, letters and old railway timetables.The talk will also include some details about RAF Ballykelly aerodrome in WW2.

Future talks will include - they will not necessarily be in this order:
1. The third in the series of WW2 talks with Geoff Rabone travelling across France, Belgium, The Netherlands and arriving in Germany during 1944 and 1945 when he was part of a radio and radar technical team involved with Gee Navigation for aircraft.
2. The fourth talk will cover the railways of immediate post-war Germany and Geoff's travels around the country with lots of unpublished photos he took at the time.
3. Powering the Railways – this will look at the different types of propulsion for diesel and electric trains, followed by developments such as bi-mode (diesel and electric in the same train) and battery and hydrogen trains.
If any member of the group would like to talk about a subject of interest please get in touch. It doesn’t have to be a full session.
If you need photographs for a talk and don’t have suitable ones they can often be found quite easily from a variety of sources. If you aren’t happy about the IT side don’t worry as there is help available!
