Monthly general meetings are held at Methodist Central Hall in the Strand, Longton, ST3 2JH, on the last Thursday of each month. Doors open at 1.30pm for a 2pm start.

A range of activities are organised, including guest speakers, music, Jacobs Table, quiz, etc. Free parking is available on the Tesco Car Park which is only a short walk away.

A Representative from Nat West Bank will talk about fraud. The talk is titled "Friends Against Scams".

Early notification that on 30th August, the Monthly Meeting will consist of a short quiz and a Jacob's Table.
Summer Schools
Thu Jul 26th SUMMER SCHOOLS

There are still places available on some of this year’s residential courses. Cryptic Crosswords, France, Garden History, Literature/Philosophy, Mathematics, Opera, Play Ukulele and Spanish History still have spaces at Harper Adams University in Shropshire, from Monday 23rd to Thursday 26th July.

Places are available for Music, Drama, Latin, Musicals and Singing at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester from Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th September. To book a place go to summer-schools.u3a.org.uk.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE AND AGM – “SHAPING OUR TOMORROW”

This year’s conference and subsequent AGM will be held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, in the grounds of Nottingham University, from 28th to 30th August 2018.

U3A members will be sharing views, ideas, expertise and experiences and workshops will focus on lifelong learning, managing new educational resources, finance, digital skills and supporting growth and development of U3As.

Throughout the three days there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss, debate and share ideas with colleagues from across the movement. There will also be free time to take part in singing, ukulele playing, walking, self-publishing and planning a dance event.

Jazz Study Day 2018
U3A subject adviser for Jazz, Mike Rance has arranged for band leader and master of the saxophone and clarinet, Alan Barnes, along with his eight piece all-star band to lead our Jazz Study Day on September 19th at Westminster Cathedral Hall. Book at u3a.org.uk/events,

Shropshire Study Day

‘We the Curious’
Workshops and Sense Re-wired Show at Bristol Science Centre. It seems that instead of just 5 senses, we might have 33!

On 20th September, U3A members are invited to enjoy a day out with a difference. On a journey through the biology, chemistry and psychology of our amazing brains we’ll examine how our senses help us understand the world. For more detail and to book your place visit u3a.org.uk/events.
Discussion

Evening and Weekend Meals
Fri Jul 20th EVENING & WEEKEND MEALS

The next evening meal will be at The Tollgate, Blurton on Friday, 20th July, when we will meet at 7pm for 7.30pm. This will be a set price menu with about 3 or 4 options for each of 3 courses. Details are still to be confirmed. £5 deposit per person is required as soon as possible.

Fay has also booked a table for an evening meal at the Greyhound, Burston for Saturday 25th August. £5 per person deposit will be required and food will need to be pre-ordered, so menus will be available as soon as possible.

Tenpin Bowling
Thu Jul 26th The next Tenpin Bowling evening will be on Thursday, 26th July at the Hanley Cinebowl on Festival Park and you will need to book and pay in advance.

The group meet at 6.30pm to start bowling at 7pm. The cost is £11 which includes shoe hire, food, one drink and two games.

Walking

Walks are normally held on the first and third Mondays of each month and are usually up to 5 miles unless stated. New members are always welcome. The next walk will be:

Aston Marina. Meet at Aston Marina at 10.30am.

Mon 16th July
Stone short walk. Meet by Star Inn, Star Lock on the canal at 10.30am.
