Let's Learn Latin
Venue: Newtown
Weekly, Wednesdays, 1.30 - 3.30pm
"So, why bother with Latin these days? Dead as the Romans, surely?
Well, our new ‘Let’s Learn Latin’ group is finding that there’s a lot of life and fun to be had when reading even the simplest of Latin texts. We’re learning the language, from scratch, at a gentle pace and we’re also discovering the history and culture of the Roman world. It’s fascinating to learn how our English tongue, and all romance languages, have been significantly influenced by Latin. We approach Latin mainly by story reading, but we also spend time with the nitty-gritty of the grammar-translation method.
But that sort of ‘lingo-speak’ doesn’t really do justice to what this group experiences. We’re not nerdy grammarians. We’re not ancient history bookworms. No. We’re just a bunch of friendly, curious folk who say, “I’ve always wanted to discover more about Latin and the Romans”. So now, here’s our chance to do so, in a fun and very entertaining way. And our u3a Stockton is the starting point. Why not set out with us, along our very own Appian Way? ('appy one way!)"
