Crowing Upstarts
Meets at: Newtown Community Centre
Weeks 2 and 4, Tuesday 1.30 - 3.30pm
We ‘Crowing Upstarts’ are a bunch of ordinary folk who fancy reading through a play or two, to lighten the load with a raised eyebrow, a gentle smile or a belly laugh. And we never fail to learn something of interest along the way.
We’re finding that reading Shakespeare out loud together is really good fun. We like to have a chinwag about why the playwright wrote the way he did. We find out all about the ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ world of the Elizabethan theatre and we giggle, snigger and chortle along with the audience that Shakespeare was writing for. The group members can throw themselves into the past imaginary world of make-believe, going as deep into it as they want.
What we find fascinating is how these plays, written some 420 years ago, have something of value to say to us today. - provocative, gritty relationships / political power at play, / cheats and deceivers getting their comeuppance / lovers messing it up big time - it’s all there in 1605.
Now, you don’t need to have read any of this stuff before. This exciting world awaits every fresh newcomer. Or perhaps you have some previous experience of Shakespeare and would enjoy sharing your enthusiasm with keen and friendly folk. Whatever your circumstances, please consider joining us. You are most welcome!
