The Linguistics group meets in Henfield on the third Wednesday of each month. It discusses all aspects of language, generally from a Sociolinguistics point of view, but also with strong interests in English grammar and the history of language.
The group has discussed, inter alia, the first words spoken by mankind (a greeting, not an oath!), the development of Greek and German (discussions led by native speakers in the group), the movement from Latin to the modern Romance languages, as well as the unwritten codes of conversation – and the puzzling varieties of adverbs in the English language.
New members are always welcome – simply contact the group leader, Justin Young, on 01273 493034. It’s an enthusiastic group and no previous knowledge of Linguistics is required.
