We are an enthusiastic group of hopeful linguists, all of whom are making steady progress with this somewhat difficult but rewarding language. We base our studies on the Hugo language text book supplemented by plenty of other material and our weekly meetings involve listening and speaking as much as possible before getting down to grammar and text books! We are now trying to involve native portuguese speakers in our meetings. We spend alot of time testing each others skills in communicating in this fascinating language which provides opportunities and challenges which we are all enjoying immensely.
We maintain contact with a number of local contacts who are native Portuguese speakers and meet as regularly as possible. In addition to the language we also study the history and culture of this fascinating country and its peoples.
We are in contact with the Portuguese equivalent of the U3A in Lagos on the Algarve and with a small private language school in the same town where they have groups learning both English and Portuguese. We have been able to build a regular correspondence with them for an exchange of views and experiences.
Most of our members regularly visit Portugal and we often arrange to meet in the Algarve when members of the group are there. Each year we enjoy a Sardinhada (sardine barbecue) normally about the end of July when we invite our Portuguese and Brazilian friends to join us for a traditional Portuguese party! This year was no exception and the Pasteis de Bacalhau were the best yet!
We now have three separate groups to cater for different levels of ability all of whom get together from time to time.
