Mah Jong (East)
Mah Jong is a very old Chinese game. One of its alternative names is The Game of the Four Winds which may explain why we have Mah Jong East and Mah Jong West in Steyning & District U3A. The Mah Jong East group is for the area east of Steyning, Bramber, Beeding, Partridge Green, Henfield etc. and the West Group is for the area West of Steyning, Storrington, Ashington West Chiltington etc Those who live in Steyning can choose which group they attend.
It is played with tiles, not cards, but is similar to card games, it has suits and the aim of the game is to collect groups of tiles.
There are 136 tiles in a set, 4 of Bamboos, Characters, Circles, the 4 Winds and the 3 Dragons, plus 8 flower and Season tiles or 'pretties' as this group calls them making a total of 144.
We play by Max Robertson rules which are slightly different to the British Rules and are in fact Australian. (Max Robertson was a Tennis commentator, some of you may remember him).
As from the meeting on the 9th August we have a new venue for our meetings we will be meeting at The Haven (if you want information about what The Haven is please see either the Henfield Hub or the internet).
