10th Anniversary News!
As part of Stanway U3A’s 10th Anniversary celebrations we are delighted to launch our first ever competitions and there are 3 of them, which we hope will appeal to many of our members. We witnessed the sundry talents of our members at the Variety Show in January, but now we would welcome the opportunity to sample those of member’s with creative and artistic bents. We hope that as many of you as possible will enter at least one!
Each competition is open to all current members of Stanway U3A, entry is free. Latest date for receipt of all entries is 31st July 2018.
Stanway U3A Photography Competition
Categories – there will be 3 categories in this competition:
- Countryside/Local Wildlife
A broad and general category that gives full reign to your artistic talents.
- Scenes In & Around the Stanway Area
Not just Stanway Village or Tollgate, but the surrounding villages such as Birch, Copford, Messing, The Layers, Mersea, and of course, Colchester. There are far too many to list here but we are looking for photographs taken up to approximately 5 miles from the centre of Stanway that capture the essence of these locations.
- U3A Activities
Any U3A pursuits which you feel represent the spirit of the U3A for you, group activities, meetings, outings, socialising, the choice is yours.
How to Enter: Select a maximum of 3 photographs for each category and send as a .jpeg attachment by email (email address on page 7 of June Newsletter) to arrive no later than 31st July 2018.
• Rename the photograph to include your Name, Where the photograph was taken and the Date on which the photograph was taken.
• Include in the Subject of the e-mail the words "Countryside" or “Wildlife” for Category 1; "Stanway" for Category 2 and “U3A" for Category 3.
• If it's not possible to rename the image, put your Name, Location and Date of the photograph in the body of the email.
• Attach one photograph to each e-mail and send to the above e-mail address.
A note of caution If you are taking photos of children under 16 you must obtain permission of the parent. Also, if your photos include people, their permission must be sought to display the pictures.
Judging & Prizes: All entries will be displayed at our 10th Anniversary Showcase on 31st August. Judging will be by members attending the Showcase with the results announced and prizes awarded on the day to the Winner & Runner-up in each category. These photographs will also feature on the website, be displayed on the noticeboard at meetings and featured in our newsletter.

Stanway U3A 8" x 8" Art Challenge
This competition is for the artists in our midst. We are not setting a category, you choose the subject, any genre from landscapes to life drawing, abstract to collage, tapestry or embroidery. Any media, for example oils, acrylics, watercolour, pen & ink, felt tip, thread or multimedia!
The only criterion is that the finished work must be 8” x 8”.
How to Enter: You may enter a maximum of 3 pieces of art. Send an email (see June Newsletter page 8) to register your entry/entries include ‘8x8 Challenge in the subject line and give the name of your piece. You should fix a label to the back of your work with your name and contact details. Your artwork can be passed to the Events Secretary at any meeting (see June Newsletter page 8), or any member of the Social Sub-Committee if more convenient. Alternative we can arrange to meet and collect.
Judging & Prizes: All entries will be displayed at our 10th Anniversary Showcase on 31st August. Judging will be by members attending the Showcase, with the results announced and 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes awarded on the day. Your work will be photographed and will feature on the website, be displayed on the noticeboard at meetings and featured in our newsletter. Closing date for entries: 31 July
Stanway U3A Short Story & Poetry Competition
An opportunity to share your imaginative talents with other members by submitting an original poem or short story, or both! Any genre, subject or theme, but the finished work must be no more than 500 words (excluding title).
How to Enter: Your entry should be clearly typed in black in a normal font and double spacing, using ‘Word’ format. The title is to be at the top of the page. On a separate page, give the title of your story/poem, the number of words, your name, email address and phone number. These details will not be seen by the judges. Your story/poem and your details document should be attached to an email (for email address go to page 8 of June Newsletter) to arrive no later than 31 July. If you do not have email access, please ask a friend who can email it for you. However, paper versions will be accepted, please speak to Publicity/Noticeboard Officer (see page 8 of June Newsletter).
Judging & Prizes: First round judging will be by all members of the Social Sub-Committee who will select the best 10 entries to go forward for final judging by the team at Red Lion Books. Winners will be announced during the Anniversary Showcase and prizes presented on the day for Winner and Runner-up in each category, Short Story & Poem.
The Winning and Runner-up stories and poems will be shown on the website and feature in future editions of the newsletter.
Please note that for all three of the above competitions the judges decision is final in all matters. Judges and Organisers will not enter into any correspondence/discussion with any entrant.
