This Group started early in 2014. You do not need to buy a telescope to benefit from this Group. Telescopes have a fairly small field of view and need practice to use. However, a good pair of binoculars is much better for the beginner, and with these you can observe easily over a larger area of sky and learn your way around the heavens.
The North Essex Astronomical Society holds very interesting and informative meetings at Silver End on the third Wednesday of each month starting at 7.30pm with the lecture starting at 8pm. These meetings are open to the public at a cost of £3 per person, which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.
The Maldon U3A also holds monthly meetings at Stow Maries Airfield starting at 7.30pm. U3A members from other areas are welcome (a charge of £2 is made to cover the cost of the hall). The meetings take place on the fourth Monday of each month and offer a speaker together with some observing if the skies are clear. Although this venue is considerably further from Colchester, lifts can be arranged and the Group Leader usually has a couple of seats available.
