Sports - Petanque
IMPORTANT NOTICE - 16/3/2020 - The start of the Petanque season has been postponed initially to May as a precautionary measure due to Coronavirus.
This group was established in 2012. Our current venue is at a local hostelry, The Wooden Fender, Ardleigh, where there is a large terrain suitable for any number of members playing. There is no charge to play but we expect members to purchase a drink at the bar as our appreciation for the use of the venue. Snacks are readily available.
The Petanque season runs from March until October and we play on a Tuesday afternoon usually twice a month. Lifts can be arranged to the venue.
At the end of the season we hold an informal Individual Annual Competition for our U3A Petanque Trophy, which the winner keeps safe until the new season. Linda, the 2018 winner, is seen in the photograph presenting the Trophy to Jean the winner of the 2019 competition, closely followed by Colin and Charles.
The playing dates for 2020 are listed below and have been emailed to current group members. If you have not received them please send a message to the Group Leader using the Bluebird at the side to ensure you are on the mailing list.
We welcome all new players to this very addictive sport; instruction can be provided. It is possible to become quite accurate very quickly; playing as part of a team, develops tactical and observational skills. We aim to have fun while practising the skills of 'pointing' and 'shooting' in the sport of Boules from a standing spot within a designed circle (which is why it is called Petanque to differentiate from Boules). Trainers as footwear are advised but no other equipment is required as boules, scoreboards, jacks (cochonet) and measures are provided.
If you would like further information or wish to register your interest please use the Bluebird contact button at the side of the page to send a message to the Group Leader.
