Sports - Petanque
This group was established in 2012. Our current venue is at a local hostelry, The Wooden Fender, Ardleigh, where there is a large terrain suitable for any number of members playing. There is no charge to play but we expect members to purchase a drink at the bar as our appreciation for the use of the venue. Snacks are readily available. The new Petanque season begins resumes on 13 March 2018 and continues until October/November. Lifts can be arranged to the venue.
At the end of the season we hold an informal Individual Annual Competition for our U3A Petanque Trophy, which the winner keeps safe until the new season. Phil, last years winner, is seen in the photograph presenting the Trophy to Rob the winner of the 2017 competition. Brian and Pat came a close 2nd and 3rd.
We welcome all new players to this very addictive sport; instruction can be provided. It is possible to become quite accurate very quickly; playing as part of a team, develops tactical and observational skills. We aim to have fun while practising the skills of 'pointing' and 'shooting' in the sport of Boules from a standing spot within a designed circle (which is why it is called Petanque to differentiate from Boules). Trainers as footwear are advised but no other equipment is required as boules, scoreboards, jacks (cochonet) and measures are provided.
On Tuesday 14th November ten players of the Stanway Petanque group travelled to Maldon to play a friendly match against other U3A groups organised by Blackwater U3A at Maldon Prom.Park at 1:30pm. A good time was had by all and the weather was kind to us. According to the host leader John, who was very impressed with Stanway Team’s standard of play (especially 3 ‘feisty lady players!’), the final results were a draw. We plan to arrange further matches in 2018 as we improve our standard of play. Next year we are entering two teams in the southern U3A league organised by Blackwater U3A. We will have to play our home matches at Maldon as our facilities are not up to league standard at present.
