Two new groups have started this month. Book Group 2020 will meet on the first Tuesday of the month and Pilates 3 are meeting on Thursday lunchtimes at 12.50. The leader of the new Pilates Group is Jean Anderson.

Stansted-Rungis Town Twinning Association have organised a Wine Tasting evening on Friday 21st February at 7.30pm in the new Mountfitchet Exchange. Tickets are £25 from twinning@stansted.net.

Thorley U3A Family History group will be welcoming Ian Waller to their meeting on Friday March 28th and they have invited interested members from our U3A along. The meeting will start at 2.00 p.m. in The Emmaus Centre next to the Barnabas Centre, Church Lane, Thorley, CM23 4BE. There is a large car park opposite the Barnabas Centre. Ian is a retired professional genealogist and has been the former Chairman of and a Fellow of AGRA (The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives). He is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists, was a trustee and Chairman of the Education Committee and has published several books in the Society’s “My Ancestor” series including My Ancestor was an Agricultural Labourer, My Ancestor was a Mormon, My Ancestor was in the Royal Navy and My Ancestor was a Leather Worker. His talk is entitled Researching Before Parish Registers. Pre 1600 research is an entirely different "ball game" with many records existing that can be useful although the familiar ones had not even commenced. Many of the early records are underused and many family historians consider their research can go no further when parish registers stop. This talk helps family historians see what is available. Following the talk there will be tea and biscuits available and a chance to ask Ian questions. This talk is open to all U3A members at a cost of £4.

The Christmas Lunch at Bury Lodge was well attended and another great success. You can see a photo of it on the right. We were entertained by the Stansted Mountfitchet U3A Strummers before lunch. There were some fantastic raffle prizes, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and some of the members. Here is a list of the businesses who kindly donated to our raffle:

We had a fun Christmas Tea Party on 12th December when Paul Adams took us on a journey through music of the 50's and 60's, playing and singing many of the songs. There wasn't much dancing - not for want of trying on Paul's part - until we got to the Locomotion, but people were singing along and enjoying themselves while munching their mince pies and cake.

As you can imagine, there has been much celebration going on throughout the whole month. The St Mary's Christmas Tree Festival saw three trees being provided by our U3A - you can see them on the side of this page. Those who attended on the Sunday afternoon were entertained by our very own Strummers (picture again on the side of the page) and the audience were all joining in and singing along.

On the 15th of December the Stansted U3A Singers entertained at the Hadham Golf Club Christmas Lunch. The Singers' profits from this go into the general U3A funds. This must be the 8th or 9th year that they have asked the Singers along to sing at their annual event. You can see a photo of the Singers at the event at the bottom of the page.

Many of the groups had special meetings during December and there are photos of Yoga, French 1, Creative Writing and Poetry at their festivities at the bottom of the page. The Card making Groups also enjoyed a Christmas buffet prepared by Terri.
