Stansted Mountfitchet U3AStrummers
Stansted Mountfitchet U3A Ukulele Group
More widely known as the Stansted Mountfitchet U3A Strummers
The Group was established in September 2015 by Patricia Cooper when about twenty prospective members signed up, none of whom had any experience of playing the ukulele.
Membership has fluctuated over the years but a core of enthusiasts have kept faith from the outset.
The ukulele is a joyful instrument and fun to play in a group. The ability to read music is not necessary. Hundreds of songs can be enjoyed using only a few simple chords.
The Group had the benefit of a tutor at the outset but we now run our sessions on a voluntary leadership basis and there is enough experience within our midst to help new members along.
It is possible to have the loan of a ukulele to ‘test and try’ before deciding whether to join.
Singing is, of course, an important aspect and we very much welcome more voices and indeed other instruments to add to our repertoire.
The Strummers have performed by invitation in various venues such as Care Homes, Fundraising Events at St Mary’s Church in Stansted and WI Groups.
There is no pressure to take part in these: the main emphasis is on enjoyment and the satisfaction of playing and singing in a group.
We meet every Monday in term time at the Quaker Meeting Hall in Chapel Hill from 14.00 to 15.30.
