Ukulele
The Ukulele group meets fortnightly on a Thursday from 10.30-11.30 at the North End Community Centre, Holmcroft Road.
We would welcome new members who have some playing experience but if there are a few people thinking of taking up the instrument a beginners’ session might also be possible.
We meet to play and sing together (with the emphasis more on playing than singing). There is no formal teaching as we don't have an "expert" in the group, but we all learn from each other in an informal, fun way. The emphasis is on enjoying the experience of making music together. We didn't start in the group as complete beginners; we all had a few basic chords so were able to play songs straight away. Mainly we strum but we've had a few goes at finger picking, some more successful than others. Everyone has contributed in some way to the group experience by suggesting songs to try or new strumming patterns and techniques. Above all, we have enjoyed and benefited from playing together in a fun, non-threatening way.
The advantage of the Ukulele is that you can buy a decent instrument fairly cheaply and with only four strings, can quickly learn a few chords. There are lots of songs that only use two or three chords so you can get going straight away. People who have previously played a guitar have found the transition quite easy.
