Discovering Maths
The group normally meets Monthly on the First Friday from 13.30 to 15.30 at Burton Manor Sports and Social Club
We are continuing to investigate a wide range of Maths-related topics in a not too academic fashion. Recently we have looked at
* how newspapers may mis-report risk by using headlines such as “Daily fry-up boosts cancer risk by 20%”,
* flexagons - paper polygons, which have the fascinating property of showing previously hidden faces when they are "flexed“ or folded,
* and the maths behind a planimeter – an instrument that can calculate the area of an irregular shape just by tracing around its perimeter.
Sometimes we have a light-hearted maths quiz, where everyone is encouraged to bring in a couple of maths teasers for the group to solve.
Some of us are also continuing to meet approximately fortnightly on Zoom to discuss answers to the Maths Challenge puzzles published weekly on the u3a website. They are not too difficult - have a look at them and join us.
