Joint leaders: Joy Cooper and Jennifer Clarke, with support from Bruce Hanworth
We now have two U3A Italian groups. The first group started as a beginner group several years ago and is now suitable for people of an intermediate level. This group meets in the large room at St Ives Library – from 10.00 until 12.00 every Thursday (see below for list of dates this term).
In the intermediate group, we use a wide variety of resources to extend our experience of the Italian language. Sometimes we work from "Enjoy Italian" - a Teach Yourself book by Sylvia Lymbery that covers intermediate to advanced levels (B2). We also use the Library's wifi to access the significant Italian learning facilities which are available online, for instance news items available in Italian, video clips etc.
In addition to that, we are also reading some intermediate Italian literature and doing a little grammar work as well. In small groups, we try to engage in conversation with each other on a variety of topics, and sometimes individual members of the group contribute items of particular interest.
A new beginner group, led by Peter Law, began in October last year, and this group also meets in the Library on Thursday mornings from 9.30 – 11.30am, in the small room. They are following the BBC Talk Italian series, and making use of the many online resources now available for learning a new language.
Unfortunately, this group is now full but Ian Greaves, our groups co-ordinator is compiling a waiting list. The list already has several names and there is probably enough interest to start a third group if one or two people on that list would be willing to set it up. You do not need to be a teacher to lead a group and if anyone would like more information about what is involved, Joy, Peter, or Ian, would be only too happy to advise.
If you are interested in joining either the Intermediate group, or in adding your name to a waiting list for another beginner group, please contact Joy via the link on this page.
