UPDATED JUNE 2020 – BOTH ITALIAN GROUPS MEETING ON ZOOM DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Joint leaders: Joy Cooper and Jennifer Clarke, with support from Bruce Hanworth
This group started as a beginner group several years ago and is now suitable for people of an intermediate level. This group normally meets in the large room at St Ives Library – from 10.00 until 12.00 every Thursday. During the Coronavirus pandemic, we are continuing to meet on Zoom every Thursday at 10.45am.
In the intermediate group, we use a wide variety of resources to extend our experience of the Italian language. Sometimes we work from "Enjoy Italian" - a Teach Yourself book by Sylvia Lymbery that covers intermediate to advanced levels (B2). We also use the Library's wifi to access the significant Italian learning facilities which are available online, for instance news items available in Italian, video clips etc. We have also purchased a teaching resource called I Come Italia which covers a number of topics in a lively and interesting format.
In addition to that, we are also reading some intermediate Italian literature and doing a little grammar work as well. In small groups, we try to engage in conversation with each other on a variety of topics, and sometimes individual members of the group contribute items of particular interest.
A new beginner group, led by Peter Law, began in October last year, and this group also normally meets in the Library on Thursday mornings from 9.30 – 11.30am, in the small room. They are also continuing to meet on Zoom on Thursdays at 9.30am. They have been following the BBC Talk Italian series, and making use of the many online resources now available for learning a new language. This group has progressed to an improver level so it would now be difficult for a complete beginner to join the group. However, currently they do have four places available for those with just a smattering of Italian. Contact Peter: email@example.com
Ian Greaves, our groups co-ordinator, is holding a waiting list of people interested in joining a new beginner group. Once the current Coronavirus restrictions are eased and groups are allowed to reconvene, Peter Law would be willing to start a new beginner group if one or two others were prepared to share the leadership with him. This could easily be someone from the waiting list as you do not need to be a teacher or an expert in the subject to help lead a group. If anyone would like more information about what is involved, Joy, Peter, or Ian, would be only too happy to advise.
If you are interested in joining either of the above groups, or in adding your name to a waiting list for a new beginner group, please contact Joy via the link on this page.
Both the Intermediate Group and the Improvers Group are planning to continue meeting on Zoom every week for the time being. However, the Intermediate Group will be taking a break during August.
