READING GROUP 1
This is a home based group which meets in Sunbury from 10.00am to 12noon on the second Friday of the month.
We have each read a chosen book in preparation for discussion at the meeting. The morning then “kicks off” with a quick question round the group “Did you enjoy the book?” Brief details about the author are then presented. Whether the book is loved or hated it always provokes a lot of discussion covering the story, method of writing, plot and characters. Obviously the members’ personal experiences have a bearing on their opinions and a lot of interesting points are raised. All present are encouraged to join in and are given a chance to say their piece.
Once a year we meet to organize the future programme. Each member chooses two books and they give us a brief synopsis. We then vote for one of these which will be read by members over the following twelve monthly meetings.
A classic novel (such as "The Great Gatsby") is always included in the annual programme which begins each September. Recent reads have included “My Cousin Rachel” and “Mud bound” (both recent films). “The Taxidermist’s Daughter” (a gothic horror) and “The Ice Cream Girls” (televised a short while ago). Chosen books must be easily obtainable either from the Library or online and quite often members successfully trawl charity shops.
Although meetings are held in a residential area, car parking is reasonable and the 216 bus route is within a five minute walk.
