Music Appreciation (Group 1)
A Group dedicated to the appreciation of Music was one of the very first groups to be formed by the then fledgling Spalding and District U3A, some 15-16 years ago (although the name of the Branch was slightly different then). Then and now we meet at the homes of our Group Members on the third Thursday of each month where we enjoy Classical Music and discuss the music we hear, though not both at the same time!
For the purposes of our group we define “Classical” as Symphonic, Operatic, Chamber and Ballet Music. When the Group started, the source of our enjoyment was CDs, and even the odd LP, but later one or two members introduced Video DVDs of music of the types already defined which proved to be very popular. We now regularly use CDs and/or Video DVDs, as available. We also use previously broadcast material which has been recorded to the HDD of a member's PVR.
Since we are meeting in Members' homes we are rather limited in the numbers we can accommodate: one does like to be comfortable and not crowded whilst sitting listening to music.
For some years we have been full and with a waiting list, but in the last few months a number of people have left for various reasons and so we do now have room for a couple more.
Ours is a very informal and relaxed Group – we require no more from our Members than a love of music. We meet to appreciate not to dissect the music and often our discussions turn out to have little to do with the music, but we do not apologize for that – after all we are a social Group as well.
