The music appreciation group meets on the third Thursday of each month at Southway
Community Centre, Didsbury, starting at 1.30pm.
Each meeting normally covers two contrasting themes, drawn from a very wide range of
music including classical, jazz, folk, pop and rock. Recent topics have included the music of
Cole Porter, Mozart in the movies and the history of the harp. The normal format is a talk by
the group leader, illustrated by video clips. Discussion is encouraged and members are free to
contribute their ideas and opinions and, if they wish, make presentations of their own, though
there is no obligation to do so.
Occasionally trips are arranged to concerts or to live screenings of opera.
Our aim is to increase the enjoyment of music through greater understanding. This may
involve finding our more about the social and historical context of a particular style or
musician or learning more about the techniques involved in playing and composing.
I look forward to meeting you!
