Page Turners' Book Group
We are the third book group as ‘Reading’ is a popular activity with our U3A members. We read a wide variety of books reflecting the tastes and interests of our group, which makes interesting discussions. We are presented with books that are non-fiction, fiction, humorous or crime. Some of the authors are new and others are well established, but perhaps we have not read their work – it can also encourage us to read more of their writing.
We start the meeting with coffee & biscuits and a general chat with each other. We take it in turns to recommend a book and that person starts the meeting with a short back ground summary of the author and their thoughts on the book. It is then opened up to general discussion. At the end of meeting we rate the books on a scale of 1 (not keen) to 5 (would read again and recommend to others).
We have been meeting face to face since the Summer & now go to Members’ Homes again as this is preferred to Zoom. In November we met for an American Brunch hosted by Barbara Gibson. We enjoyed freshly made waffles with crispy bacon & maple syrup, pastries , Strawberries & cream! Thank you to Barbara for a delicious meal! The discussion of the chosen book Orchid Empress by Anchee Min was animated.
Books read recently are The Red Notebook by Antoin Laurain, Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell & The Darkest Evening by Anne Cleeves ( a Vera book).
