Book Group
There are thirteen members in our group and we usually have very good attendance at our meetings which take place in each other’s homes on the first Friday of the month.
Throughout the year each member chooses a book that she or he would like to recommend. A short presentation on the chosen book, which usually includes background information about the author and a synopsis of the book, is given and then the meeting is thrown open to a general discussion.
This year our choices will take us from Anne Watts's nursing experiences with 'Save the Children' in war-torn Vietnam through to John Banville's Man Booker prize-winning exploration of memory, childhood and loss. En route we will visit France with Julian Barnes in a search for 'Flaubert's Parrot'. As a group we have varied tastes in literature which lead to some very interesting discussions.
Our July book choice is 'Noise of Time' by Julian Barnes. We don't meet in August. In September our book choice is 'Howards End is on the Landing' by Susan Hill. This will be followed in October by 'The Code of the Woosters' by P.G. Wodehouse. November will see us reading 'The Little Red Chairs' by Edna O'Brien and the year will end with John Banville's 'The Sea'.
