Poetry
The Poetry Appreciation Group
We meet on the First Monday afternoon of every month, at 2.30pm. Meetings take place in members' own homes.
We have a structured programme which is varied.
We are a small group who like to read poetry aloud to each other; we share our favourite poems and examine a wide range of poets and different styles of poetry writing, both ancient and modern.
Sometimes we study the life of a poet, or we may use a theme such as youth or humour, so that a variety of poets and their writings will be included.
By sharing our experiences we come to understand and enjoy a wider range of poets than we would by private study.
Jessie is knowledgeable about different methods of writing, for instance she explains the rules of Haiku and Sonnets, ballads and monologues.
Joyce is acknowledged for her humorous verse, and John Hooper for his thoughts on nature and its beauty. Meetings are entertaining as well as educational.
The U3A Poetry Group met last Monday in January. The theme for this meeting was love and valentines. Members contributions included sonnets by Shakespeare, poems by Burns, Shelley, Carol Ann Duffy, Pam Ayres and poets previously unknown to the group. Two members had written their own poems. Everyone agreed it had been a most enjoyable meeting.
We are quite a small group and would welcome new members. Sometimes we study a poet and sometimes we choose a theme. We have also examined various poetry forms. Some members write their own poetry but most people like to choose and read out poems which they find appealing.
We meet on the first Monday of the month at 2.30. If you would like more details please contact Jessie Bailey 0121 238 5584.
